Differences in diction, syntax, and tone are glaringly obvious. Sometimes, you can just ask them to explain the meaning of a word they’ve used and they crumble. And AI is still pretty bad at sounding authentic and has no voice. It may be grammatically flawless but it’s bland and corporates.

Yes, that can be helpful although, again, if you’re focused on improving their writing skills and less focused on specific content, having them write sample papers in class by hand several times a year that you retain also works well. You can compare that work to what they’ve produced submit.

Exactly. The question is how to balance authentic writing and actual teaching. For developing writing skills, the writing process itself IS the teaching in a sense so a writing lab approach can work. But the model is far less workable when you have actual content to teach as well.

Yep. What I have see happening more and more is teachers basing evaluations on what the students produce in class either through summative assessments or longer project based work done entirely in real time. The problem with this approach is the loss of instructional time.

Yes, it is the only real way to determine if they wrote the piece themselves. The problem is that teachers don’t have the time to question each student individually. We can, and do, question the most flagrant violators but the process is immensely time consuming not a long term solution.

Well, I’ve raised two kids and both went through phases when they behaved very much the way this idiot behaves so I think the comparison is perfect apt. And there were moments when I humoured them just as Carney is humouring Trump here. I’ll stick with my analogy.
