A cracker of a day for a birding adventure

Touring the Channel and Orielton Lagoon with my mate Els for the Annual #PeliCount

I learned that while most Tassie pelicans migrate north for winter to breed, a few stick around. In some beautiful spots!

Last week, the Tasmanian govt released a draft Bill to remove merits appeals in Tasmania

It was great to speak tonight at a public meeting in Moonah tonight, big thanks to Planning Matters Alliance Tasmania

Over my way, there's a smoke alert and health warning.

And an hour ago, the smoke from these catastrophic fires reached my window in nipaluna/Hobart

To show the real extent of this damage, this is just the Arthur Pieman fire.

The (i) tells us the area burnt is already above 50,000 hectares (52,559ha)

Emergency grants are available for Corinna, Sandy Cape and surrounds

How widespread is this? Very.

Bushfire across the Arthur Pieman Conservation Area, the Donaldson Range Regional Reserve, including National Heritage

Another in Meredith Range Regional Reserve, an area known as the heart of the Tarkine

And at the Lake St Clair area of the World Heritage Area.

I spent time in takayna this summer, and we were shocked to see an incredibly dry rainforest

Rainforest species like these beautiful nothofagus need rain and the west coast has the biggest number of days of rain in the country

Yet this summer is dry, an increasing trend.

A new year light show in nipaluna. Some beauty to start the year the right way.

I'll take it as a portent for the year ahead

Spent time on kunanyi today with my kid, full of life & scree hopping

With a spectacular showing of Tassie waratah, we were struck by the diversity of wildflowers and invertebrates.

A place to tread lightly, and to be protected for future generations
