I am enjoying reading this brilliant book. However, Goldie died shortly after he finished it and that breaks my heart at least once on every page.

But why? I obviously don't understand the concept of "commitment". And why is it linked to obligations? We are always responsible for our actions. Couldn't we just assume more kindness and solidarity in the past (in a non-virtual past)?

The short story 'The Christmas Pageant' (1968) by the American writer Barbara Robinson (1927-2013) alone is worth reading. The other stories in this marvellous anthology are just as amusingly wise and exciting.
