I agree not just guides, it’s important we have strong content knowledge to help guide experiences and ask the right ?s to propel Ss forward in their learning. We must also be experts in listening, and facilitating learning. That can mean guiding Ss to ways to explore things we know little about.

I don’t think anyone recommends this or has this intention, however in practice this is what I more often observe. I read you blog post could see it worked for you in 4th grade and held meaning for you and seemed to for students in the way you facilitated the routine.

…Other than when an admin walks in for the students to be able to point to the objective and read it off when asked what they are learning, although if they are still learning to read this too is a challenge.

Articulating, yes. But when the requirement is in place to be written or posted daily for each subject (in my experience already established for the teacher by district or curriculum), and then recited chorally by students rotely, for each subject during the day, I don’t see the benefits in practice

I don’t equate knowing what and why you are teaching with the requirement to post these on the board each day.

Yes number of the day is a powerful routine, too. I once had a group of kindergarteners choose to do this everyday on their own in centers. I remember one student discovered they could add any number they like then subtract that number and still get to zero. Varying our language in describing what
