The Sitophilus/Sodalis is a very special model in insect #symbiosis. The endosymbiotic bacteria are required for a rapid synthesis of the adult protective cuticle but once the cuticle is achieved, endosymbionts are promptly eliminated.

Several biological processes are at the center of endosymbiont regulation including immunity, metabolism, Hippo signalling, metal control, apoptosis, and a massive bacterial stress response once the environment becomes hostile.

We unraveled a #crosstalk between #weevils 🪲 and their endosymbiotic bacteria 🦠 that can be seen as either fully mutualistic or hostile depending on the stage of insect development.

It was a huge molecular biology 🧪 and #bioinformatics 🧬🖥️ work to decipher their molecular dialogue through 12 stages of insect development using Dual RNA-seq (metatranscriptomics from host and bacteria) and RNA-seq (from symbiotic and aposymbiotc insects)
