My two favourite editing catches this week #AmEditing

a long-running pillar of the team's strategy --> long-standing pillar. Stay still please, pillars.

Love, Actually --> Love Actually. There is no comma. I initially thought the punctuated version was an improvement but commaless is correct.

Cats make really rubbish editorial assistants. #AmEditing

A client correctly used a proper multiplication sign instead of a letter x in their text. First came happy pride, then the fear that a time is coming when they won't need me... Elsewhere in the text they wrote 'performance was underperforming'. They will never not need me, phew! #AmEditing

I picked this up by chance at the library and it did not disappoint. A book about editing and proofreading! And other stuff, but they're the important bits, obviously! 😉 Now I want to visit a printing plant to see physical books being made - sounds like a theme park for book nerds. #AmEditing

Already posted this on LinkedIn (I've been trying to up my LI game from the tumbleweeds it was): I'm delighted to have passed the PTC Essential Copy-Editing course with merit. It took me a VERY LONG time but it was incredibly rewarding. Ready to take on (almost) anything now! #AmEditing

Editorial mindset sometimes means stopping to read all the signs, even in the pouring rain, and appreciating the power of pure unminced words. Well said, City of Aberdeen. Also, the gate in question - ridiculous and ugly. Excuse crap photo - really was more of a wet walk than a #StetWalk

I am thinking about adding a statement to my website saying that I will not edit AI-generated text, nor will I use AI in my editing. I mean, I won't knowingly anyway, but I didn't consider the need to proactively state it as policy until recently. #AmEditing

Mildly creepy #StetWalk beside a hidden railway.

I went to an event last night showcasing and celebrating stories and poems written by young people through a local literacy charity, who I have done some voluntary editing for. Such a privilege to hear these amazing stories come to life and a reminder of the power of the written word. #AmEditing

This week has been a lesson in how vital a good internet connection is to a modern freelance editorial business. Despite an engineer visit, I've had to abandon my office to huddle close to the router for its pathetic trickle of internet. Full fibre broadband ordered, can't wait. #AmEditing

Relieved to have completed my latest edit and returned it to my client this morning. We are in the red zone being battered by this storm and the possibility we could lose power / WiFi was hanging over me with every correction! Definitely no #stetwalk today! #AmEditing

When you've been away for a few days do you ever feel like there is a barrier to your return to work? Or maybe that someone in the office has tried to take your place? #AmEditing

Forgot I had this CIEP bookmark with proofreading tips. All good advice #AmEditing

Reviewed my editorial business objectives for 2024. Of ten objectives I achieved four, did not achieve four and partly achieved, or achieved if you kind of squint at them, two. So, I've learnt a valuable lesson and set easier objectives for 2025. Duh. #AmEditing

Just reactivated. It's looking a lot livelier around here. Hoping to connect with lots of fellow freelance editors and friends old and new!

Before the hail. No snow yesterday afternoon on our bit of the coast but plenty just a couple of miles away under that ominous cloud. #StetWalk

Caught a good typo this morning. 'Chins' for 'China'. Apparently multinationals are diversifying away from solely investing in Chins. Which is a shame, as I have been developing a small portfolio of Chins over the last few years. #amediting

This seems a great place to connect with the editorial community. I'm on Threads and will keep that as a non-work social, and post editing stuff here. I'm quite new to editing so more liking other people's posts and stealing their ideas than providing any great insights myself.

I forgot I asked for an invite code, seems like ages ago. This place looks good for connecting with fellow freelance editors and proofreaders. I'm starting by finding and following some of you using #amediting Hello, everyone👋
