I see, my journey is about what happens after graduation…Italy, admission to universities work quite differently as studying is a constitutional right (diritto allo studio), so most unis and programs cannot limit admission and a minority of degrees have admission testes. Even schools of medicine now

I left my home country (Italy) in my 20’s for exactly that reason. I thought I’d never have a chance at satisfying intellectual jobs since my inheritance was null. I found that meritocracy existed in the #UCSystem and started my academic career in the U.S. 15 years on, my belief is quite different…

It’s true that universities hold the broader responsibilities you mentioned but a good PI and mentor can create a decent environment for her/his team. This is not easy and I’m still learning by the day

Thank you for sharing your story. I also started my career with a similar bad experience. Luck & and perseverance got me a professor position and all changed. From my postdoc, I learned research methods & skills, but most importantly what a good mentor should be. I use this value during interviews
