A few photos from last weeks Bear Lake Buckwheat survey. This species is currently undergoing review to determine if they should be officially protected under CESA. I mean.. they totally should.. they can only be found, and I mean only location, in this small parcel in Big Bear. #conservation

Work morale continues to be a struggle for many of us on the conservation side of things. So, last week a few of us at work decided to visit the Santa Margarita River- the last natural perennial river in SoCal as a reminder that there are still areas to protect and that beauty is still out there.

If there was a time to put in the effort and protect our environment especially in SoCal- now is it! A huge development is in the NOP process, adjacent to the San Jacinto Wildlife Area! I strongly encourage those who can to comment and to spread the message!

This male BUOW was extremely protective of his fluffballs, and was even seen/heard calling for them as they were getting banded. He did not appreciate the extra level of stress ..🦉😬

Under that atrocious“Big Bill” - this is how much of California’s public lands could be sold to private companies/individuals. This includes our National Parks!

Woke up in a fowl mood 🦉

Earlier this week, I was able to participate in a BUOW banding event for Owls that we have been monitoring for a while. An amazing moment, especially with so much attention and work over the last few months centered around them. 💙

2025 has been something to say the least. I have taken the longest social media break to date in order to better navigate what we call “Life”, and to help ground my mental self-being. Although I’ve been socially quiet- behind the screen I have been very active in speaking out against [1/]

But like…. Why are just about all of these non-native 😑

These are the future plants they will use at the Resorts …lol.

So glad it’s the weekend, I’m mentally drained from my workload. I feel like Nature knew, and surprised me with a few bird species on my run today 💙

Saw a GRRO, which I’d yet to see on this trail, a SPTO on the ground, a NOFL, which I haven’t seen here in a few years, and a WEME. 😁

Pico (Azores Island) is the tallest point in Portugal, and it’s also where my family is from.

This is from my last trip where I trekked in the rain at 2am to make it up by sunrise. 🌅 🌋

Saw thousands of crows on my last run, along the Santa River River. Every night they come back here to roost, and although I think corvids rock, seeing this many in one of the two densest areas in SoCal for the Endangered Least Bell’s Vireo is concerning..

I always take a walk during my therapy sessions and was not disappointed today. 🤩 Got to see some White-Faced Ibis’s hanging out!

CDFW staff spent the day at the Oak Glen Preserve, which is managed by The Wildlands Conservancy. Local Botanist Legend - Tim Krantz showed us around and presented some of the work they are doing in the State. Such amazing work- they are an amazing partner to work with!

This morning we had an important meeting with a Permittee in hopes that they apply for an Incidental Take Permit (ITP). My supervisor moved all the big taxidermy behind in hopes of intimidating them. I think it worked! We are getting an ITP!

Yesterday, while inside, I saw this COHA fly up with prey out of the corner of my eyes. I then ran to get my lens and headed outside only to find that it successfully hunted in my yard. 🤩 This looks like the same adult I saw down the street, a few days ago, carrying another bird. #birds #raptor 🪶

I think the Cactus Wren was probably my favorite species I saw at Joshua Tree NP. They are such a fun bird! Although, it was weird to not hear its call, but that may have been due to the large crowd. #birds 🪶

Spent the day birding at Joshua Tree National Park with my good friend and favorite birder- Bettina. 😄 Nice to get out there and get away for a bit.
