I was in Gates of the Arctic national park a couple weeks ago. This is what it was like—on snow, on tundra, on the riverbanks, in the moose trails, even on the argo tracks. The terrain: “Is this step gonna hold? Guess. Guess again.”

Starting tomorrow I spend 11 days in the Brooks Range with Andrew Skurka and like-minded type-2 crazies. Today we were handed our bingo cards.

For my performing friends: ForScore glitched on me tonight 30 seconds before my solo. Instead of music with all my markings, I had just the markings on an otherwise blank page. Then it jumped to the last page of a 40-page score, so I had to stop singing and tap madly until I got back.

Magical realism—mostly logical, but with some strange twists that don’t quite add up.
You're a book. People are reading you. What genre are you?

David Foster Wallace has given me chills in two subsequent essays today. I wish I had started him earlier.

The thickest concentration of Joshua trees in the world used to stand here in Mojave National Preserve until a wildfire destroyed a huge number of them a few years ago. Now their desiccated remains hang like skellington’s ornaments.

I’ve moved off of goodreads and on to StoryGraph. It was very easy to move my reading list over. The book recommendations feature is on-point. My only complaint is that there’s no easy way to find friends. So if you want to come find me, please do. And if you want to find me, let me know.

2. When you finish a book, you may buy two-four new books.
3. When you are within a hundred pages of the end of a book, you are not expected to keep up with the demands of life—sleep, chores, returning emails, etc.

🎶 Music calms the womb?

A study finds that classical music exposure makes foetal heart rhythms more stable and predictable in late pregnancy, with effects lasting after the music stops.

This suggests music may influence early heart development before birth.
