I’m researching. Top classically meant beginning. I’m guessing from an hour glass when most of the sand was at the top. Half way through, most of the sand was at the bottom.

Agreed. It’s basically a right-left thing if the clock thing doesn’t come naturally. My other mnemonic is like a drain or an hour glass. That might be where the clock thing comes from. I’m going with the hour glass from now on.

Top of the hour comes before the bottom of the hour. (Not that we really use those terms anymore.)
