Nearly 100 responses in and we can see that nearly half of union staff think that their union is not engaged in AI being used for internal operations or projects.

Not surprised.

More surprising is 1 in 3 saying their union is not engaged in policy, representation, advocacy on AI impacting members.

This final question in the survey of union staff on their experiences and views of AI is a gold mine.

Here’s my favourite response so far.
One final question... imagine you had a magic wand. You can determine what happens with Al in the next 12 months. What do you wish for? 57 of 72 answered I doubt I'll need a magic wand - the tech industry already knows that it's in it's death throes, and they are overexposed. It will die, but not before the Government hands massive amounts of cash to their pals in the private sector to deliver AI in public services, and it will be terrible (just like it was in the Netherlands, where they've already done this and had to roll-back hard from it). All that will happen is that the poorest and most vulnerable in out society will suffer further. Unions should have nothing to do with it - it's another capitalist grift.

Yesterday we asked members of the @Unions21 "AI for Unions" online community to air their views on AI use in their work.
We asked for their hopes, and their fears. The discussion is only starting, but a few early themes have emerged…
Text: My concern relates to non-union online services for workers attracting members away from the union, and that advances in Al will increasingly provide a superior industrial advice and advocacy service than we can provide with limited staff and hours.
