Eighteen months ago, the Guardian asked me for a long and funny piece that simply ran through all the ways 14 years of Tory government had turned “broken Britain” from a slogan to a campaign promise. That sounded both cathartic and important, in so far as anything I do ever is, and I was flattered to be asked, so obviously I said yes. It came close to breaking me. Actually, compiling a list of all the ways in which the social fabric had torn since Labour had last been in office was not cathartic at all. Reminding myself of every socially useful bit of the state that had been torn down; relaying stats on everything from hospital waiting times to food bank usage to rough sleeping – a phenomenon that had, by 2010, been effectively consigned to history – was enough to genuinely affect my ambient levels of happiness. Were I to be scrupulously fair, I would note that not everything the Tories did had been bad, and not everything that went wrong on their watch was actually their fault. (Some, at least, would have happened anyway.) What was undeniably true though was that they inherited a country which broadly worked, and passed on one which didn’t, and that forcing myself to think about this in detail over several days caused quite severe psychic harm. What was even worse was that, thanks to unaffordable fiscal promises and assorted other kicked cans, more things were on the verge of breaking. Thankfully, though, the Labour party seemed aware of the fact: on 21 May 2024 a list of looming crises, nicknamed “Sue’s shitlist” after the incoming government’s likely head of policy, made its way to the press. Things were bad, yes – but the cavalry were on the way. I am concerned, with that sentence, I’ve inflicted quite severe psychic harm on all of you guys, as well.
