Artificial Unintelligence -- @merbroussard.bsky.social
From someone who lived and worked in the culture of Silicon Valley, Broussard breaks down in simple terms how AI works and why it doesn’t work.

Algorithms of Oppression -- @safiyanoble.bsky.social
This book is one of the best illustrations of how data (the internet, cloud, AI models) has structure, and that structure reflects the biases of those who make it. It shows you how search engines recreate racism and sexism by design decisions.

Less is More -- @jasonhickel.bsky.social
Degrowth is a strong counter to the idea that infinite growth is compatible with a sustainable life on our planet. AI is banking on more growth to fulfill its promises. Less is More reframes the idea that more extraction stops overextraction.

Data Feminism -- @kanarinka.bsky.social @laurenfklein.bsky.social
Data Feminism is the best introduction to issues of justice and data science. I assign chapters of this book in every course I teach. This book lays bare how some data-driven systems empower people and others oppress.

The Age of Surveillance Capitalism -- Shoshana Zuboff
This now-classic work gives one of the best overviews of the political and economic incentives of Big Tech & how they’ve created a new profit model through mass surveillance.

This is just another aspect of the weird tech-driven corporate attack on education backed by the Trump administration and in full force as companies push AIed into universities across the country. Tech companies are totally out of control and need to be held accountable

It's undoubtedly in the interests of the tech companies to actually stop students from learning humanities and ethics, because it makes them not want to work at places like Palantir (surprise)

Engineering education in particular is a space where higher ed serves as a crucial point of change, building in strong ethics, sociotechnical thinking, and humanities thinking for students who otherwise would only take math and programming

Palantir's own thesis that universities aren't training good workers says it all. Universities are *not for* training workers. Yes, you get a degree. But part of any education (engineering most of all) is to learn widely -- philosophies, humanities, literature -- think critically, build community

This is so strange and disturbing. As someone who went through nearly 10 years of higher education, I can say that it is not perfect by any means. I did absolutely learn a lot from doing projects and slogged through some mathematics courses, finding them difficult. But this is not the solution

The topics they cover are absolutely insane, seeming to present a pro-U.S., pro-Western view of the world and prop up people like Lincoln and Churchill. And they also take math and programming courses.
