Today's species: Banana slug, Chuckanut Mountain, WA, 2025. This is our only commonly-seen native slug in the Pacific Northwest. They feed mainly on decaying matter, seldom on live plants.

Today's species: Redwood tree, Redwoods National Park, CA, 2019. Only 5% of California's old-growth redwoods are left, and those that remain are protected thanks to the hard work of dedicated activists.

Today's species: Olympic marmot, Olympic National Park, WA, 2025. This species of ground squirrel is found only in the Olympic Mountains, where it's almost entirely confined to the alpine zone.

Today's species: Rocky Mountain Parnassian butterflies on University Mountain, Missoula, MT, 2015. Even small peaks in the Rockies support unique ecosystems with species not found at lower elevations.

Today's species: Periodical cicadas, Cook County, Illinois, 2024. These insects emerge from underground by the millions every 13 or 17 years. Hearing the woods come alive with their calls is unfogettable.
