Passing sentence, Judge Baraitser told Edwards, who appeared via video link from prison: "You take no responsibility for your behaviour and show no remorse." He was given 16 months in prison and a restraining order lasting ten years.

She told the court she was isolated from friends and family as Edwards took control of her life, saying: "The more I stood beside him, the more I lost value in myself... There were days I didn't recognise the person in the mirror."

Appearing in court today, the victim, visibly emotional, said: "I was left with someone who used fear and violence to keep me small... with him I was always in fight or flight mode."

Edwards was further accused of rape and sexual assault but was acquitted by a jury. He was convicted of actual bodily harm and controlling and coercive behaviour, and was separately found guilty of theft and burglary, after he stole her phone by breaking into her address.

The jury was told about evidence of further exchanges found on Dale's phone with other inmates, including one identified by police as Conor Money, to whom she had also shared sexually explicit messages.

The court also heard that Dale and Sharif shared intimate messages and conversations and continued to do so after Sharif was moved to HMP Swaleside, where Dale visited on three occasions to give him money and discuss the plot, including once after her initial arrest at Swaleside.

The jury was told of CCTV footage from HMP Coldingley, which shows Dale and Sharif entering a prayer room as two other inmates kept watch. The pair emerged four minutes later, with Dale said to be seen adjusting her hair and belt.

The Crown said there was "clear evidence" that Dale knew she was acting unlawfully, but that she was nonetheless "happy to assist" in a "conspiracy" to smuggle spice-soaked carbon paper disguised as envelopes into prison.

Bernard was denied bail on account of his previous offences and breaching the terms of his community sentence. He is due to appear in Southwark Crown Court on 14 November for his latest offence.
October 17, 2025 at 4:24 PM
The court heard from Bernard's probation officer that he appeared "evasive and dishonest" during his appointments, adding he had failed to complete his rehabilitation activities and any of his court-mandated unpaid community work.
October 17, 2025 at 4:24 PM
Bernard did not indicate his plea today as the matter was deemed too serious and could only be tried at Crown court. But that did not stop the magistrates from handing Bernard a four-week custody sentence for breaching a community order for his most recent offence last November.
October 17, 2025 at 4:24 PM
The defence said Bernard may be a victim of modern slavery, telling the court the 22-year-old found himself homeless upon his release from prison for a previous offence last April. He was eventually given shelter free of charge, raising concerns of exploitation.
