Can recommend visiting the castle as well (but might be biased 👀)

Kelly Cates noting Alan Hansen’s recent health issues but being glad he was “back to full fitness”. Maybe Liverpool should’ve eased him back before the PL trophy handover, doing the u18s awards night or something

Just thinking as well, pretty sure there’s a load of finds from St John Hope’s 1889 dig at the Postern Tower museum at the castle. Worth a look when the castle opens. A fair few De Vesci’s were buried down there as well

I think I remember reading that Charles I stayed at the Abbey on his way to confront the Scottish Covenanters in 1639, apparently because the castle had no rooms for a king 🤣

I led a guided tour of Alnwick Abbey for the HHA a while ago, it’s amazing being able to walk around an invisible building but still being able to know exactly where everything was!

Yeah no probs (I’ve still got my profile over there, which is appropriately enough @Nick_OverThere)

The estate closed that bit off to the public a while back, can’t remember why tbh

The Abbey was very wealthy and a popular pilgrimage site, mainly down to there being a bit of Simon de Montfort’s foot kept there! A few properties in the town were acquired by the Abbot for pilgrim accommodation, one is now a travel agent and has a De Vesci cross on the wall inside

When I was a kid Alnwick Scouts used to meet at the Abbey gatehouse (when it used to be publicly accessible). I remember going down to the river and pulling back the overhanging grass and finding huge stones still in situ down there

Matthew Mills was the mason who carved the 18thC statues/garden gnomes on the castle (as opposed to the 14thC ones) and those dotted around Hulne Park 👌🏻

The longer history of the St Thomas’s site is interesting, sounds like there was a chapel there relating to Alnwick Abbey, the ruins of which were still visible in the 1700s, although there’s no sign of it on the 1624 town map.

Not loads to tell tbh. The farmhouse was built by the Selby family (lords of the manor of Holy Island, Prideaux Selby the ornithologist etc) and their coat of arms is above the door. The gothic style of the outhouse looks similar to their folly the other side of Clayport, near Swansfield House

The duke cut the rents by 25% during the Napoleonic wars. They remained at the lower rate well
into the 1820s after his son took over. Both men were directly involved with the Tenantry Volunteers, 1300 men at any one time (many thousands over the course of the war)

Finest doorway in the town as well

It’s a cracking little pub, has often been CAMRA North East pub of the year
