I don't care if generative AI does what people want to believe it does. I don't care if it's truly amazing (it isn't). You don't get to brush aside the system it's part of, that created and sustains it, and pretend you can "objectively discuss the technology itself."

That way we can highlight some letters in some text, like how fuzzy search matches look, without splitting up the markup and breaking accessibility.

The "spanning-item" rule seems misnamed. I would have guessed with that name that the highlighted intersection would have a break since no items span it. If this is the intended behavior, maybe something like "max-length", "t-junction", or "dead-end" would be better.
