Are you embarrassed also that, over 130 years after the publication of Über Sinn und Bedeutung, an essay considering plenty of German examples, about the philosophy of language, and by an analytic philosopher, you and your friend should be struck in the way that you record?

It's in Joseph Stock's life of Berkeley (1776). www.maths.tcd.ie/~dwilkins/Be... Fontainais' translation of De Quincey, Murder Considered etc. n. 32 says that Stock is the earliest source. www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/7...
