I was genuinely honored to sit amongst these amazing disabled women last week on International Women's Day to talk about representation, intersectionality, and disability justice. #IWD2025 #AccelerateAction

Thank you Sightsavers Ireland for hosting this event!

Obviously no city is 100% perfect but Barcelona may be one of the most accessible cities I’ve been to! I was very impressed by the metro system + the small raised platforms for wheelchair-users to have level access to the door. Such a simple solution to a big problem. I wish Irish stations had this.

And that's it! The little synopsis for each section does mention 'disabled' or 'disability/disabilities', so it's clear that disabled people are priorites for the Soc Dems.

In this thread I am just looking at the manifestos but there is a more detailed plan in the Disability Policy Document. 9/9

Their pledges regarding Education, specifically inclusive education are good. I like their pledge to provide additional funding for accessible educational material for deaf, blind, or visionimpaired students, but it's a shame that they didn't have the same thought when making this manifesto. 8/?

That was the end of the 'Disability' section but there are some pledges in other parts of the manifest.
1. Electric Vehicle charding facilities
2. Accessible public transport
3. DPO consultation for all transport projects
4. Cycling scheme

These two sub-sections, 'Supporting Autistic People' and'Reform of Governance and Accountability' have a lot of points in common with other manifestos, but the pledges are still good. The Disability Inspectorate is a new and interesting one, though. 5/?

Here are the main disability pledges. There are some good pledges here; I am particularly interested in the pledge to recognise the role of DPOs, and the pledge to establish an organisation separate from the
HSE to assume responsibility of the assessment of, and care for, disabled people. 4/?

I think there could have been a lot more disability-specific points in the Housing section. 3/?

Their pledge to only join a government if there is a cabinet Minister for Disability has been spoken about quite a bit. I feel (like many others do) that disability issues were neglected in the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, so this pledge is great. 2/?

Life has been busy these past few weeks but I am determined to finih this.

Next up: Social Democrats.

I feel like the Soc Dems have made a lot of noise about disability inclusion in the run up to this election, so I am surprised to see no accessible manifestos. 1/?

I definitely expected to see very strong disability work/emolyment pledges from Labour and they didn't disappoint. 10/?

This is the kind of detail other manifestos have been missing regarding housing. It's really great to see a pledge to reform m Part M building regulations to
require wheelchair liveable housing, and the plede to invest in decongregation and moving young people out of nursing homes. 9/?

These pledges are good and what advocates and allies have been calling for but I would have liked to see a lot more about inclusive education. 8/?
November 22, 2024 at 2:19 PM
Another point we've seen in other manifestos but I definitely appreciate their pledge to improve transperency and accountability. 7/?
November 22, 2024 at 2:19 PM
The same goes for the pledge to develop an adult neurodiversity and support pathway.

November 22, 2024 at 2:19 PM
The pledge to reform the Disability Act 2005 is a common one across most other parties, so, hopefully, we can expect to see this, no matter who is in the next goverment.

Same for the pledge to introduce a cost of disability payment. 5/?

Disability pledges are mentioned throughout the sections in the manifesto but it’d be very messy to review every separate one, so I’ll skip forward to the dedicated sub-section ‘Disability rights and services’.

I expected every party to pledge to deliver a new National Disability Strategy. 3/?

I’m already so impressed. They produced a ‘plain English’ manifesto for the 2020 election, so I expected something similar this year - but this is so much more! Fair play, Labour. 2/?

Next up: Labour

I was really interested to see Labour’s manifesto because I feel like I keep seeing people (disability advocates, in particul leave other parties to join them, so I thought they must have something great up their sleeve. (1/?)

The last points regarding disability are in the 'transport' sub-section. These pledges are good but there are some big issues with accessible public transport that I expected to see mentioned here. The 24hr notification period for assistance on rail services, for example. 7/?

The first half of this page are just repeats of and expansions on pledges we saw earlier but I think the rest are quite interesting.

I particularly like their point on ISL. It wasn't in the 2 manifestos I've already looked at nor do I expect mant other parties to mention ISL. 6/?
