'Stay. Please.' Conor slowly sat down beside Mateo. His copy of Macbeth sat open on the floor, barely annotated. Conor tutted. 'I sent you all my annotations.' The bed creaked as Mateo sat up. He sniffed, 'I couldn't be bothered.' "You got a pen?' They sat shoulder to shoulder as Conor scribbled through the play. And Conor didn't know how it happened. He wasn't sure who turned their head first or who leaned in, but he could taste Mateo's tears on his lips, and he thought about what happened the last time another boy had been this close to his face.

Conor did. Ian Stephens had been in the back of his mind the whole trial. The feeling of warm blood trickling over his lips, the dull ache at the back of his head for days afterwards. The only time he had ever raised his voice at his parents when they suggested he go back to training the following week. He had left the house in a rage and ran to Daniel's, had sworn in front of Daniel's grandparents, and sobbed on Daniel's bed until Niall came to pick him up. He had coaxed him with a four pack of beer and a promise that they wouldn't speak about it.

Sat beneath the fourth station of the cross was the most beautiful boy that Conor O'Shea had ever laid eyes on. His attention was briefly held by Jesus and the tenderly placed hand of Mary upon his cheek before it was caught by the boy. He was playing the church's ancient organ, and the kaleidoscope of colours from the stained glass windows swept across his deep brown skin. His dark curls seemed to bounce in time with This Is My Body, and the hymn died on Conor's lips.

Mateo was furiously wiping his eyes when he shut the car door behind him and, not for the first time, Conor was sure he was the worst person to ever exist. He opened his mouth with the intention of saying something nice. •We need to collect our timetables,' he said instead. Pressure began to build in Conor's chest as they walked into school. He had told the GP his mum had forced him to speak to that it felt like his heart was only beating to get out of his ribcage. His blazer pocket rattled with medication that was meant to stop it. Five tables were set up in the packed school hall that buzzed with the sound of chatter. Conor rubbed his chest as they joined the line for Year 11 timetables and tried not to snap at Mateo every time someone bumped into him, and he fell into Conor. "Sorry,' Mateo mumbled, 'I thought British people liked lining up.' 'Shove them back, Conor said, wincing when Mateo stepped on his bad ankle. 'Sorry,' Mateo said again. The woman sat behind the table had been the one to hold a tissue to Conor's nose when his hands had shook too much to do it himself the previous summer. She handed Conor and Daniel their timetables and looked at Mateo.

The pub was nice, and Conor hoped that the Landlord's memory didn't stretch to the 80's. Niall slid into one of the snugs and looked up at Conor. 'Your round,' he said, 'Pint of Guinness.' 'Please, love,' Bernadette said, holding her hand up. 'Hang on,' Conor said, 'It wasn't my idea to come here. Dad's round!' 'No chance, Brighton,' Albert said, 'Wages are different down there.' 'T'll have a Guinness too,' Daniel piped up, 'Mum-' 'A glass of wine, please.' Bernadette perked up, 'Oh, you know what. If you are then-' 'Four Guinness and two wines, then,' Albert said, 'You might as well get a bottle, actually.’

"Shouldn't you be quitting?' Mateo slid onto the bench beside Conor and linked their arms. Conor stubbed out his cigarette and popped a mint into his mouth. 'Probably,' Conor said quietly. 'You don't seem very happy.' Conor bit into the mint. The icy cold grounded him a bit. Brought him back to the weight of Mateo's head on his shoulder. 'I am,' Conor said, 'I just...I'm never gonna be one of the lads, am I? But I don't know how else to be.' 'Better than everyone else,' Mateo told him, 'They can't hate their best.' 'No pressure, then.' Mateo put his hand on Conor's cheek and turned his face towards him. He kissed him, and for a moment, Conor forgot why his heart was beating so fast. 'If I can do it, so can you.'
