if you had to compile a reading list on the challenges of 21st century civ of similar scope, length, digestiblility by rat-adjacents as www.21civ.com BUT with YOUR political slant:
how'd you go abt it?
where'd you start?
who else would you ask?

being an old "millennial" is gonna sound so much more charismatic than being an old "boomer", like some kind of elder vampire caste

i hope we get to keep our moniker by the time the young start blaming everything wrong with the world on us, cause we won the lottery with that one it goes hard

Could we try to compile another list of The Best Textbooks On Every Subject through bluesky, like this LW post attempted to?

What could be possible ways to set this up to work well on bsky?

(I think the rules in the picture, for starters, make sense)

if you looked at these graphs you'd maybe guess that, here in italy, the anti-inequality animosity from the left on our social media would differ substantially from that of the US

or that they'd blame unfettered capitalism much less for our country's ills

if so, you'd be wrong on both counts

thinking that italian TV was ridiculed and drew feminist ire for the women in skimpy clothing as eyecandy, but this format would've been seen as gross even by berlusconi's mediaset standards

doubt this could have happened in the west outside the US; know counterexamples?

When it comes to evaluating my own ideas, it's really annoying to be paralyzingly pessimistic by default and overconfident when on my ADHD meds - with no good middle ground

I mean if I have to choose between the two, at least on overconfidence I try lots and get something done! but man... x_x

I haven't followed the GPT-5 release closely, but I saw a lot of disappointed commentary

Progress sure doesn't seem to have plateaued on at least this measure though

I actually just scored 130~140 in what should be a pretty reliable test, and I even have pretty good reasons to believe I underperformed

I'd been told the psychotic breaks I went through came with int decline, so I was terrified to test till now... but to my immense relief I seem to be doing ok! :D
My brain is pretty boring in some ways.

120~130 probs, & not nearly as much knowledge as I'd like due to laziness, ADHD and bad long term memory

To the extent I find it interesting, it's mostly that I spend a lot of time thinking, I'm independent-minded, and open to updating views and self-improve

I dont want to hide where I stand for fear of losing some bluesky friends–
I think Woke is a serious threat to liberalism and lucid policy-making, not a mere annoyance. It worries and irritates me to see it downplayed.

But Trumpism is an *even worse* threat to my ideals and very worth fighting too.

Any explanation of the appeal of Scott Alexander or rationalism that doesn't also explain why they're the only culture that values and promotes prediction markets and other methods of rigorous predictive accountability so much is not a very good explanation imo.
Here's my theory about (part of) the appeal, particularly in nerd circles, of Scott Alexander and Curtis Yarvin. And it's a theory of why so many people found them appealing who weren't (simply) in it for the plausible-deniability racism or their central message that a high IQ makes you superior. 🧵

IMO trve counterculture tries to push multiple correlated swinging cultural pendulums as close to the ideal, "correct" center positions as possible, if that makes sense.

Can be an eternal struggle because they love to swing wildly, & the "centers" are hard to aim for and to see, and can even shift.
counterculture is an inherently self-defeating proposition

as soon as you get on top now you're the culture

and you now have to fight yourself

If you not only feel, but WELCOME the feeling of joy at the extreme suffering of your outgroup or you ENCOURAGE it in others, it's a very reliable signal that your moral compass is trash, according to understanding of morals that makes sense to me

Hold me accountable if I'm not consistent w this 🤝
