KMnO4 is an oxidizer with a strong affinity to small molecules (which tend to be more volatile). Permanganate has an affinity for a wide range of chemicals (ie it’s not too selective). I’ve seen it on filters with activated carbon but honestly don’t know if it gets you anything the carbon doesn’t.

IME, math & science are uniquely more forgiving the higher you go.
For example, I’m a chemist who is not very good at organic chemistry but excels at inorganic & spectroscopy. It’s just accommodated as a different skill set.
