Tonight I had the distinct honor of lecturing to the just arrived cohort of 100 Princeton-in-Beijing language students, started by showing them the class photo of my own PiB cohort from summer 1995. The combination was so moving, I had to fight of tears before starting to speak

Each year, the centerpiece of our @penn-us-china.bsky.social fellows’ visit to Beijing is a 2 day workshop at Tsinghua University. This year’s discussions were simply outstanding. Many thanks again to my friend Da Wei for hosting us, and also this year to Prof. Wang Jisi for his keynote remarks
Our third cohort of @penn-us-china.bsky.social fellows have arrived in Beijing! Now in the midst of a very full and engaging week of dialogues, with many different interlocutors, all around town.

I was privileged to speak with PKU Yenching Academy students today, about the state of China studies generally, and how to make best use of the opportunity they have here now. My core message: there are countless China scholars of my generation back home who are cheering these students on.

After ten days together in China, my @upenn.edu students are on their way back home. I could not possibly be more proud of how they conducted themselves on this trip, representing the best of American values at every stop. One of the most inspirational things I’ve seen in my lifetime.

My @upenn.edu students enjoyed a terrifically productive couple of days in Shanghai, including dialogues at the Department of Commerce, NYU Shanghai, the Shanghai Institutes of International Studies, and Fudan University’s Center for American Studies. All fueled by great coffee ☕️

We enjoyed a wonderful visit to Peking University and its Yenching Academy yesterday, including a stroll around Weiming Hu, and a dialogue with preeminent PKU law and international affairs faculty.

Our @upenn.edu undergrad policy task force on U.S.-China relations enjoyed a wonderful day at Tsinghua University yesterday, a full day workshop with Prof Da Wei’s students, discussing the thorniest issues in the bilateral relationship, followed by a visit and tour of Schwarzman College
