This Year’s Model (1978), Costello’s first album with The Attractions, is arguably one of the definitive #newwave albums. Compared to the stripped-down rootsy sound of My Aim Is True, this album is tighter, punchier, and far more aggressive, thanks to the Attractions’ fierce, twitchy interplay.

Let’s take a look at what was happening in #newwave in Britain.

Elvis Costello holds a pivotal and somewhat liminal place in the history of new wave. Though not always neatly categorized within the genre, his music and persona were foundational to its development and its credibility.

What's a movie that's basically a masterpiece but no one talks about? 🎥🖤

The Amityville Horror (1979) kept me up at night for weeks. James Brolin’s character sees some strange red-eyed creature in the attic, which deeply disturbed me. It wasn’t till years later when I googled HD pics that I realized it was the pig demon Jodie, which in retrospect looks quite lame.

The Cars occupy a unique place in new wave history—they were the bridge between edgy, synth modernism and mainstream rock radio. Hailing from Boston, they blended punk minimalism, new wave slickness, and classic rock craftsmanship in a way that made them both critically and commercially successful.

Let’s talk about Devo, one of the most original, provocative, and conceptually driven bands to emerge from the early new wave movement. Though often remembered for their red “energy dome” hats and quirky videos, their contribution to new wave is far deeper than just visual gimmicks.

Another highly influential new wave band to emerge from the CBGB scene is Blondie. Blondie’s genius lay in their genre fluidity, seamlessly blending punk attitude with pop, disco, reggae, and early hip hop elements.

Talking Heads would collaborate with former Roxy Music synthesizer player turned record producer Brian Eno on their next three albums: More Songs About Buildings and Food (1978), Fear of Music (1979), and Remain in Light (1980).

Talking Heads formed in 1975 at the Rhode Island School of Design and became a mainstay at CBGB. They were nerdy but cool, emotionally awkward but musically tight. They embodied the idea that you don't have to look like a rock star to redefine rock music.

Throwback to my early college days when I wore untucked button-down shirts with neckties because I thought it was “cool.”

I miss the days when Jason would button his shirt.

It’s been a while but here’s the latest What Random Crap is on My Shelf? Today we’re looking at the Wendy’s Kids’ Meal DC Comics keshi-style figures (2023 and 2025 editions). Contrary to popular belief, these were mostly purchased on eBay; I did not eat 1,000 Kids’ Meals to acquire these.

The pen in question. Zebra F-301 Ultra. Long since discontinued. I still miss it. I wrote pages and pages of story ideas with it.

“Why don’t you get comfortable on this floral print sofa and I’ll show you my collection of Ninja Turtles plushies? Why yes, I did win Donnie and Raph at a carnival dart game where I paid way more than they’re worth. And I’d do it again…for you.”
