Thank you to NYC IBO for sharing tips for reading NYC budget documents at our event yesterday! Now we know that the budget has units of appropriation, but to check out the comptroller's ACFR for finer-grain budget & object codes.

The Slide is titled "Finding Budget Documents" and it shows that under NYC OMB publications, for each fiscal year you can click on the May Executive Budget under "Financial Plans" which will give a slew of documents. The key ones are the Expense Budget and Capital Budget (4th and 5th in list). The Ten Year Capital Strategy is also highlighted on the slide. It is issued every other April with the physical infrastructure plans for the next decade.

Curious to know how many riders of the M104 get their rides subsidized already? You can look it up here.

~600,000 rides on the M104 were subsidized in 2024 for seniors/people with disabilities. (About 30% of rides)

Janno Lieber, the MTA chairman, has also expressed concerns about the cost of making buses free and said poor New Yorkers should come first. Some examples of inaccuracies found by the BBC included: - Gemini incorrectly said the NHS did not recommend vaping as an aid to quit smoking - ChatGPT and Copilot said Rishi Sunak and Nicola Sturgeon were still in office even after they had left - Perplexity misquoted BBC News in a story about the Middle East, saying Iran initially showed "restraint" and described Israel's actions as "aggressive"

tracreports.org and deportationdata.org are both great projects that collect information about federal immigration "enforcement" through Freedom of Information requests and make it publicly available.

This map is a great resource for NYC reporters, especially if you want to know, for example, which assembly members represent the people living in a particular community district, or which community school districts overlap with a city council district.
