Renny Harlin has done a lot of great, so it may just be recency bias to say tonight's viewing of Long Kiss Goodnight has me thinking it's my fav Harlin. Even Black's typical misogyny is toned down so you just get his solid one liners. The icy road trip vibe make it a solid Christmas action watch.

Watching Burtons best movie. "I was their number one son, but they treated me like number two" is an all-time piece of dialog.

Never seen Sliding Doors (1998) until today - a wonderful romcom with the unexpected value-add of having Paltrow pretending to be british the whole time. Especially considering her being american would have changed nothing about the story. Still - a tight charming romp.

Shakepeare in Love landed when i was 19, and was so culturally over-exposed, i shelved ever watching it until last night. It's as excellent, charming & well crafted as everyone says, despite it being the worst thing possible: a movie that validates theatre kids.

As Tears Go By was a Kar-Wai blind spot, and watching it for the first time all i can think about is how rewarding it is to watch his evolution as a filmmaker. You can see a confident talent in this smaller film, its crazy that Chungking was only 1 movie and 6 years away.

"She Rides shotgun" is a the sort of thoughtful & relentless crime movie we need more of. In an era where "morally gray" characters are a crutch for weak writing, She Rides embraces the tornado of intentions around flawed people navigating thier imperfect world they only way they know how.

Watched Christine for the first time last night. A perfect movie, beautifully shot and scored. Its amazing how many movies we made about incels before we knew what they were.

I finally watched 84 Nightmare on elm street (a huge blindspot, i know). A blast of a watch, seminal and truly changed horror, and time has added a considerable goof factor to this movie that makes it even more fun.

First time watching Dirty Ho. What an absolute perfect movie - each scene perfectly steeped in archetype, with a wonderful story while also regularly looking beautiful. Can't believe i overlooked it for this long.

Its been probably 20 years but last night I watched House on Haunted Hill - still an enjoyable watch, full of streamlined 90s filmmaking. Scares are shamelessly 'inspired' by the music videos of the era, and a competent cast makes it 90 minutes of fun.

Tango & Cash proves we used to be better at making bad movies. This movie has been hit and miss for me, but it was all hit last night: existing in the nether realm of 1989 (worst of the 80s + the nascent 90s), it's a stew of 80s action that functions off Stallone script bumps and charisma.

I decided to revisit The Beach, a movie i liked but that puzzled me as a young film buff. On rewatch, I understand my affinity for it was because its a shallow movie thats easy for a young to imprint on, and my puzzlement was because its not actually very good.

My 2000's blockbuster was Xmen, and I dont think this movie gets enough credit specifically for how it stood on no one shoulders to create the template for CBMs. It's still an excellent movie, a perfect hybrid of source material and comic book storytelling.

ESB's "Look, im sure its delicious" because Yoda is proud of his soup is probably the funniest non-sequitur line to open a scene in all of star wars

This weekend the 1998 blockbuster of choice was Armageddon, everyones favorite movie to pretend that their smarter than.

Tonight's summer blockbuster year is 1998 and while I always try to choose something I haven't seen a million times or had a niche cultural impact, there is unapologetically only one choice.

The Amateur is bland incompetence porn, linear exposition teamed with sauceless direction. Any style or humor could have elevated it, but the self-seriousness deflates a movie lacking this much creativity. It needed Doug Liman.

I almost ignored Heads of State. It looked like more over-budget streaming slop. Until i learned that Naishuller directed it - the mad russian with his own action aesthetic who seems to be one of the few modern directors capable of making a tight & insane action flick.

No one talks about how our modern shitshow has absolutely decimated the 90's film genre of "something happens to a president everyone likes" (you can watch Dave on youtube for free)

This weekends blockbuster rewatch year was 1996: The Nutty Professor. I've seen this come under fire for its fatphobia, and i'm not here to say that this 1996 movie handles that topic perfectly — but its far kinder than i remember, and within the context of its main lesson...is actually kinda nice.

The Rock (1996)

Enough cant be said about Kline. Could they have gotten an actual french man? Sure. But he probably would have either clowned it up or tried to legitimize it, Kline is perfect.

French Kiss poses a lot of interesting modern questions - can a movie be so charming that we can excuse that French stereotypes are central to its plot & casting? And can we discard all of these concerns because we are, afterall, talking about the french?

My rewatch of Waterworld for a 1995 blockbuster reveals its two main flaws: a planet of water isn't a great setting if you want variety in your adventure film, and Kevin Costner doesnt look good wet. That second one is crucial & damning.
