This is why moving to ranked choice is so important. it allows voters to vote for policies without worrying about inadvertently electing someone they despise

The most realistic outcome is more like a 48/42/10 split, with the new third party spoiling the chances of the old party without getting anything done

This will lead to the opposition party winning the election, but next election cycle, the old party voters will switch over to the new party, since the vote splitting went poorly. We're back to a 2 party system

Lets say we have an ideal situation where there's no incumbent running, so the two parties start at about 50/50
For a third party, the best case is they get the majority of the old parties vote, and a good portion of the opposition vote, something like 40/25/35.

Its getting the right 1/3 of votes thats the difficult part.
Any new political party will be closely associated with the party it split from by the opposing party. This means that the new party will preferentially draw from the original party.

I think you accidentally disabled comments on your last nthing. Personally, i hit them with the minute button, then pull the dog out when it starts splintering. usually thouhg the center is still cold so if it is, maybe another 10 seconds
