Not particularly interesting!
Location: Boston, Massachusetts.
Again, this is true! www.nbcsportsboston.com/mlb/boston-r...

I'm not making anything up, and this is not elaborate. He wants a salary cap, he does not like the luxury tax/revenue sharing system. He is on the economic reform committee, which is seeking a cap, possibly as soon as next off-season.
Henry: I was fined 500,000 for 2009 comments
The Red Sox principal owner John Henry told WEEI’sThe Big Show that he was fined 500,000 by Major League Baseball for comments he made in 2009 about MLB’s current financial system. Two years ago, Henr...

He was one of the first members named to the economic reform committee. Many people in baseball think this committee is going to push for a cap in the next couple years. I think that is taking a more active role in the matter than most other owners.

I said he called for it many times, and that is true. You asked for one quote, and I gave you two. I could find more from further back, but I am not going to do that. He stopped talking about it because he was fined and scolded by MLB.

Respectfully: I am genuinely surprised you don't know this, Peter. Here are two citations for you.

He has called for a salary cap many times over the years. He has also criticized the luxury tax & revenue sharing in the past. He is on the MLB economic reform committee, which is presently pushing for a cap. It seems pretty obvious to me. It'd be nice if he gave more interviews on these matters!

Currently, the best model for sustained success in MLB is to consistently pay deep into the tax. This is something John Henry could afford to do, but he is fundamentally opposed to it. Instead, he is seeking to end this model altogether by imposing a salary cap. Do you think he will succeed?

Interesting idea. I think something like this would need to be independent of the leagues to be good.

I thought mid 30s were the prime years for most Big Boy Sluggers?

Tommy John should be in for this reason, too.

His grand slam in game 6 of the 2013 ALCS (on an 0-2 pitch!!) was an incredible moment.

If Sonny Gray could figure out how to not stink in the month of July (something he has consistently done in the second half of his career), he'd be one of the best pitchers in baseball.

It's wild to me that this happened on a plane. After the scrum broke they were all still stuck together in a tiny box in the sky.

Much respect to you for recognizing the distinction between Just Outside Boston and Boston.

It makes going to the games depressing, too. I went to game 5 of the NBA finals in 2024, and the guys sitting next to me were making obscure prop bets and obsessing over them throughout the game. Missing history because they're fixated on Sam Hauser making a 3 in the third quarter.

(while somehow choking on my own uvula): there is a lot of emerging evidence pointing toward the healing power of switchel.

This is eerily similar to what I've found in the attic of my wife's 92 year old grandmother (Victorian dolls, encased moss samples, obscure nature books written by old person). She lives in the absolute middle of nowhere in Western Mass, and her response to every question is "WHAT? SPEAK UP."

It's appalling how conservative and reactionary the Globe's opinion section has become over the last few years.

He has a campaign event in the North End this week that is being hosted by a Trump supporter who lives in Lynnfield.

The Cape League or a good minor league park would be ideal, in my opinion.

I'm not saying they should've given Bogaerts 10 years, or even that the Devers trade is necessarily bad. My point is that avoiding going deep in the tax has been a priority over winning. 2018 was one of the best teams ever. It could have been dynastic. They gave it up to avoid the luxury tax.
June 16, 2025 at 2:10 PM
If they had just kept Mookie they would not be in any of this mess. It doesn't bother me so much that they moved on from Devers. The problem is there is a pattern of being unwilling to spend deep into the luxury tax.

If they continue to operate this way they will botch Campbell, Mayer and Anthony the same way they botched it with Betts, Bogaerts and Devers.
