🇲🇽: The National Institute of Indigenous Peoples (INPI) approves the reform to article 2 of the constitution. In their 4th meeting, changed their statute to align with article 2. Adelfo Regino Montes (Mixe) stated that this will help the INPI provide funds and autonomy for Native and Afro-Mexicans.

🇪🇨: Black and Native Ecuadorians mourned. 4 Black children in Guayaquil, Ecuador, were detained and unalived by 16 military officers as part of President Noboa’s war on gangs. Their bodies were found burned. Protests were held outside the Prosecutor’s office demanding justice for the four children.

US: Congress told it has a “colonies problem”. Virgin Islands delegate Stacey Plaskett blasted Congress after her and other territory delegates were denied a vote, then her mike was abruptly cut. People in US colonies or “territories” like Puerto Rico, Guam, & Virgin Islands have less voting rights

🇭🇳: Natives in Honduras say they’ll keep fighting a maximum security prison in 2025. After a month of protest, the Miskito people say they’re united in preventing the prison’s construction on their land. Miskito leader Mirna Wood stated they will go to the capital Tegucigalpa to increase pressure.

🇬🇹: The New Year means Mayan officials have new elected leaders! Communities in Quiché, Guatemala, have made New Years the time to celebrate traditions like the Molo’m festivity and to reaffirm their unity by changing their communal leaders, including in Xesic Tercero, Tzabal, and Salquil Grande.

🇵🇪: The Indigenous Kichwa in the Peruvian Amazon win their land back. The Puerto Franco Community in San Martín just won a court case proving that the Cordillera Azul national park, which received millions from oil companies, had stolen Kichwa lands in 2001 and that it should now be returned.

🇧🇷: Brazilian President Lula da Sliva finally approves 13 Indigenous territories and says more are to come! His campaign promise to approve 13 territories is finally complete following delays by agribusiness. He's promised even more in his next 2 yrs. Demarcation normally takes 30 yrs to complete

Landback: The Hopi will regain over 20,000 acres of their land! This victory comes after 3 decades of dispute with the State of Arizona who will now transfer the land in Coconino County to the Hopi as federal trust land. Hopi chairman Timothy L. Nuvangyaoma said: “Everything is in place.”
