I believe the issue lies not with The Verge itself, but the parent company Vox Media.

She definitely felt relatable and more realistic than other sci-fi characters. Would I have made all the same decisions she did? No. Would I have died many times over in the same situations? Absolutely. She was resilient and the ending was satisfying.
