Friday Fair Streetscape

A giant red balloon dog completely fills the main street. A sign beside that points to local restaurants. A clock tower points to the sky, several streets down. Behind me and invisible to you are the food trucks. Also behind me and mercifully, not audible are the heavy metal cover bands playing on the stage in front of City Hall. The central figure is definitely the bright red balloon dog, which is more than two storeys high. It brings out the kid in me.

One of my favourite pre-digital diptychs, completely enhancement free. The predominant colours of the island in 1993 were shades of blue.

A fisherman is bent over his net, mending it in preparation for tomorrow’s fishing expedition into the Mediterranean. His head face and arms are deeply tanned from the sun and the sun‘s reflection off the water. I don’t think he was terribly pleased with me taking a picture of him at work. He was/is a human being and not a mere tourist attraction. The blue fishing net is neatly arranged over the back of a wooden chair. The bright red floats are clustered together in an unconsciously attractive pattern. The colour is important for visibility in the water. Their shades of red are pale imitations of the red brown of the fisherman’s skin.

Hurray for Fresh Corn

This past weekend, Quincy and I enjoyed the first of the season’s corn-on-the-cob. I get the first round and Quincy nibbles the kernels right down to the cob.
Pro Tip: Use salted fresh butter if you can.

A salt and pepper schnauzer with white stockings and a white chin leans over to clean the last of the kernels off a cob of corn. The inner husks are still attached because the fastest way to cook a single cob is to keep the inner leaves attached, wrap them around the cob after removing all the silk and then microwave for two minutes.

Miss Monkey and Miss Lucy

One minute, they were best of friends; the next minute they were bitter enemies. One day I came home to find that Monkey had a bloody nose. She bears a scar to this day.

Quincy & Monkey do actually play with one another. You can tell there is no antagonism in these pictures because her tail is not puffed up nor is the fur along her spine.

Miss Monkey always goes after his beard first Monkey is a tuxedo cat and Quincy is a salt and pepper schnauzer, whose legs and butt are more salt than pepper Monkey loves to come up from underneath him The two animals take a quick breather because they notice me in the door. Quincy is facing me and monkey has her back to me. Quincy telegraphs his every move while monkey tries to pull the wool over his eyes. She is stocking slowly closer to him. When they are all finished playing, Miss monkey will groom his beard one final time and then they will come back inside

We were economic refugees, arriving in Canada 1952.
He went “home” shortly after the completion of the wall. He was a fine amateur photographer. I *wish* I knew where his photos ended up.
His family home was destroyed in the 40s and exists only in this painting

In this highly atmospheric image, with dead grass and winter, dead trees, stands a door at the top of six stairs, a door to nowhere. What makes it even creepier is the fact that it has the numbers 666 at the top of the door. For the Stephen King fans among us, let me say “Dim-a-chick? Dud-a-chum? Dad-a-cham? An exquisite filigreed triple gate bars the entrance to a palatial courtyard. The double gate will open to allow cars and trucks to enter. A small human-sized gate that spans the two larger gates is open to allow pedestrians to enter. The base of the gates is filled with a delicate filigree that also prevents cars and dogs to access or exit the space. The vertical bars of the upper portions prevent humans from scaling the gates. The handrail of the curved stairway into the dwelling is also graced with filigree similar to that at the bottom halves of the three gates.

A Taste of Freedom

Quincy is a city dog, rarely outdoors leashless. But yesterday, a friend & I drove out to a farm stand for the last of the season’s strawberries. I unclipped the leash and Quincy sniffed, snuffled, and had a good roll in the grass.

In pure joy, with his tongue out, a salt and pepper schnauzer rolls in the grass. He is looking straight into the camera as if to say thank you. Unknowingly showing off his white stockings, white beard, and white eyebrows, assault and pepper schnauzer has a happy roll in the grass. This is also a #TongueNoteTuesday picture Quincy bounces in the grass, with his tongue lolling in joy. He has found something that smells good and he is aiming to have a good roll in it. A soft whistle brings Quincy right back to me. And yet I don’t think I have ever seen him as happy. the grass is just long enough to cover most of his white stockings.

This beautiful Bluejay has white bars on his wings and a black bar that extends from his eye to the back of his head, making him most suitable indeed for the alphabet challenged this week. He fits into the week B for bars perfectly. With a wintry snow and ice background, he sits upon a fence post carefully eyeing me while he waits for me to refill the seed tray. He has a beautiful blue cap, and many shades of blue stretching down his back.
