Pseudonym of a boring policy wonk by day
@neveltenjohn.bsky.social
Center-right, former lifelong Republican, NeverTrump, policy and stat geek with too much education and too much experience.
Sigh, I have been hearing "this time the Luddites are right" for over 50 years now.

Whether you are right or wrong (Cue: 🎵Maybe This Time🎵 from Cabaret) it is NOT a new narrative.

Deny citizenship on the basis of national origin is unambiguous racism.

That label has often been unfairly thrown at conservative politicians, but Trump has earned it again and again.

Two different AIs said CS Lewis didn't say this.

Since one of them also thinks I have a daughter, I'll believe you if you are sure.

As many have noted: the current US government is OPPOSED to everything the US has fought for in the world for the last 85 years.

Also opposed to many things that have been American ideals for a quarter millennium.

It is also misleading as many of the countries without birthright nevertheless give SUBSTANTIAL deference to people born there, such as the right to choose citizenship at age 18.

🎵John Adams doesn't have a real job anyway🎵

Apologies to John Adams for the comparison.

Exactly my point

If it were a subscription service (a really bad idea that I am NOT suggesting) I would willingly pay $3 a month to be able to send and receive mail.

Over on X, Justin Amash made the same point.

And you may become a defender of the rich from MAGA.

Recently read a Hitler speech where he said he did not oppose the bolsheviks to save the bourgeoisie, and would have been happy if they just wanted to get rid of the 10,000 richest Germans.

The horseshoe is a circle.

Love the phrase "dummymander".

Less thrilled that I find myself having to support retaliation—this is fundamentally unfair to voters everywhere—but if there is an ability to counterbalance Hungarian-style election fixing, it has to be done.

It also shows part of the absurdity of Trump's charge that Europe was leeching off us. Their support and casualties in Afghanistan and Iraq should be enough to dispel that idea, but even if you look only at economics, the US got massive benefits from arms sales.

This moves GOP voters around to try to win more districts. Has anyone calculated how big a Democratic surge would be needed for this to backfire on them?

🤔I believe you have accused me of looking for long-shot silver linings before.

Reminds me of the Hungarian mayor who told the NYT: "Everyone is welcome here, we are not racists, but you don't understand, these were Gypsies!".

🙃 You don't understand, these were GAMERS!!!

This seems particularly likely on any of the strikes that mention large numbers of people.

The US has been the destination for only a small portion of people fleeing Venezuela—Trinidad & Tobago is much closer and presumably easier to enter.

I try not to pick fights with them, but I do think that ultimately the liberal right is more important to the coalition than the illiberal left.

Lol, we both have enough respect for each other that we each want to break through the other's delusions.
