Back in the US from a tour of science in Europe.
Ok, where were we?
Oh I see... from the official account of the White House 😂
@theonion.com go to bed! We don't need you anymore

When Adriatic gives you the best Renormalization-Inspired "coarse graining" example for a talk on Excitation/Inhibition and Emergent Oscillation !!!!
Now heading to Florence for #CNS2025 , part III & IV of my "Italian (Neurophysics)Tour"...

Impossible to focus on sci given what is going on, worried for relatives, friends & students in Iran, yet hoping that they soon be free. Looking forward to this, & must put together my talk:

I found that during seizures, the brain's finely tuned excitation-inhibition balance breaks down dramatically, but remarkably, an active mechanism restores it post-seizure. Insights into pathological symmetry breaking & recovery! #Epilepsy 4/n

Inspired by renormalization group concepts from physics, using temporal coarse-graining of neural activity to identify invariant properties across scales. New methods introduced for understanding complex cortical dynamics! #StatPhys #NeuralNetworks 3/n

Cortex exhibits "scale-invariant mirroring" across different temporal scales, from milliseconds to seconds. This suggests robust, underlying dynamics

I also snuck out to check the excellent talk by
@ardemp.bskyverified.social in his "sci tour": May the Force be with you! Piezo channels in mechanosensory biology....he wrapped up the session by a thoughtful note.

We had a cool event on GenAI. Each of the funded proposals had lightning talk. The diversity of the ideas, ranging from applications in bio, to material sci to computersci etc was very neat. Mine was about Neuro-Inspired system for Scientific Hypothesis Generation...let's see what comes out of this🤔

Chihuly gardens is my "pilgrimage" whenever I come to Seattle. The sacred beauty of colors and forms, this time in the "Chandelier" room resonated w the manuscript that Felipe Yanez & I are working on together: "The universality of form/function of cortical inhibitory neurons"...

📣 Mar 31st, 11.15AM, I will give a talk at the workshop "Towards an Algorithmic Framework for Studying Compositionality in Biological and Artificial Neural Networks!" Come join me if you're attending #cosyne2025

In Montreal for #Cosyne2025
Looking forward to seeing colleagues and friends. Ping me for sci and 🍺
But don't do it on "Signal".
ps. If you are coming from the US, don't forget to bring your passport. I almost forgot mine thinking that I am only traveling to the 51st state.

Great account on Barlow's legacy by @mameister4.bsky.social
Horace was a great visionary.
Here are some pics from my visit with happy Horace & his puppy (circa 2015). The visit was part of a book "long in brewing" about biological computation that I am writing about. At 95 he was sharp as a hawk! 🧵
