A day in the life of an autistic person…

TOO MUCH GOING ON by @worry__lines

I’m sorry it’s so tough - I have severe ARFID due to my autism so can totally relate. Taking vitamins & other dietary supplements can help. I also attended a paid workshop run by a national eating disorders charity (UK) and made some rough notes which I’ll share here in case anything is of use ❤️

Reposting for Neurodiversity Celebration Week!

Because we don’t talk enough about autistic strengths

There are so many autistic traits that make the world a better place

❌ harmful deficit-based narrative
✅ strengths, joys and what support autistic people need to live good lives

My #ADHD brain really can’t estimate how long most tasks will take

I’ll either:
- put them off then find that something only took a few minutes (rarely)
or
- put them off then be lost in email/ chores hell for 3-5 hours (the norm)

when it seems to take everyone else a reasonable amount of time?

There are so many #autistic strengths that aren’t talked about enough.

We are caring, driven individuals with a lot to offer despite all the stigma and discrimination.

We are enough, just as we are ❤️

Autistic people live in a world that isn’t designed for us. This can lead to burnout, especially for those who mask a lot or are undergoing big life transitions.

Recognising the signs of #autistic burnout can help you understand what’s happening and how to manage it.

A shameful secret I’ve held onto for too long:

I used to think of myself as inhuman due to who I was when unmasked. And it made me feel awful. I wanted to erase myself from existence. Which I tried, several times

But now, I realise that that feeling came from somewhere else, not myself

This weekend, I stood up in front of 100 people & told them I was #autistic… before moving onto my actual presentation slides. It was terrifying! So why did I do this? 🧵

- Because representation & visibility in general matters, esp as a disabled autistic POC. I had someone (also POC) come up to me

Still thinking about the horrors of Neil Gaiman and some of the sickening responses to it, such as those mocking the survivors

How are women expected to feel safe in this world?

Haiku (by me):

“NOT ALL MEN”, you shout
But how do we know which ones?
That’s just it: we don’t

Screenshot of the message asking if self-diagnosis is valid

I think it’s important that we make it safe for people to ask questions (no one knows everything, but we can share knowledge and learn from others!), and I read the query as coming from a place of genuine interest/ without ill intention

3. Autistic people generally identify as such out of wanting to understand themselves better and advocate for genuine needs (support, accommodations, understanding). This is no bad thing. In fact, it literally saves lives
January 18, 2025 at 3:26 PM
2. Not everyone has the privilege of instead being able to pay $1000s for private assessment
January 18, 2025 at 3:26 PM
In answer to a message I received on here (screenshot at the end)…

Yes, it IS valid to self-ID in my opinion 🧵

Why:

1. Not everyone has the privilege of being able to access #autism diagnosis. The wait for formal assessment can be several months (unlikely!) to 18 YEARS
January 18, 2025 at 3:26 PM
I can’t say this enough:

Unmasking saves lives.

Believing people when they tell you they’re autistic saves lives.

Accommodating and supporting autistic people (especially those who have unmasked, and may be anxious about judgment or rejection) saves lives.

Kindness saves lives ❤️

🧵 Instead of “so much over-diagnosis of autism and ADHD these days”,

how about

“so much under-diagnosis of autism and ADHD before”?

There are lots of #autistic people who have suffered greatly from previous under-diagnosis

For anyone who needs to hear this today:

- there is no one way to “be autistic”
- self-diagnosis is valid
- you are not broken
- it’s ok to have needs
- you are more than your struggles

2024 was a rough year.

But, looking ahead…

2025 is a good time to:

- be kind to yourself
- know that you are enough
- surround yourself with people that lift you up
- focus on your needs rather than those of others

I see a lot of beauty when people advocate for neurodiversity (the concept that the diversity of human minds is both natural and valuable) because it communicates:

- my mind is open
- I see you
- you’re not broken
- I want society to be better

Autistic self-care is so important after the overwhelm of Christmas. Especially if, like me, you couldn’t safely unmask very much

So here are some things you might want to consider (see poster)

I’m trying to focus on rest, relaxing hobbies, sensory needs & alone time ❤️

One of my special interests is looking at doors with festive wreaths on...

Everyone else today cared about walking for the sake of walking whereas I couldn't help gazing longingly at every single pretty door we passed! 😅

My partner and I have been discussing what we’re having for dinner at his parents’ house tonight and sometimes it’s really not hard to figure out which one of us is autistic

I do love his quick summary of us:

Him: "We'll have to wait and find out 🙂”
Me: "We'll have to wait and find out ☹️”
