Germany is exceptional. I have heard that Italy is also quite reasonable. But the US, UK, Canada and France are all setting higher fees for foreigners (or non-EU citizens). That's the global trend, l am afraid.
(And I was one of the victims, who had to pay tens of hundreds of pounds a year)

This is not a minor mistake we can laugh at. It indicates both the driver and the train guard failed to follow necessary procedures, and thus could have potentially undermined safety.
More importantly, the next train was 30 minutes later.
