Twilight. A few snowflakes drifting in the breeze. Animals & plants tucked up against the frost. It's going to be a cold night ❄️

Perpetual flowering Hybrid Musk 'Moonlight' (Pemberton, 1913) still going strong. The blooms, photographed yesterday, are a fragrant delight despite the drab cold weather. One of the first #roses to flower in spring & one of the last as winter tightens its grip. #RoseWednesday 🌹

Cosy cat on a wool blanket. Keeping warm 🔥

First fire of the winter in the woodstove. It has reached that point in the year that washing no longer dries outside or even hung up inside. There is nothing worse than putting on damp clothes so the stove is being hogged by a Widow Twanky clothes-horse of laundry. 🔥

The hay bar is popular this morning. I feed the sheep in long feeders until later in the winter when the clay gets the point they have to wade out to them (early January usually). Then we move to a patch of higher ground & they eat off of the floor, which spreads the puddling

The tiny crab apples of Malus transitoria 'Thornhayes Tansy' coated in water droplets from 2 days worth of heavy rain. Early winter jewels, sparkling on another dull day. ✨️

I have come inside for a cup of tea & to dry off. The wind is howling & fat raindrops splatting against the windows but someone is content on her wool blanket. I can't say I am looking forward to venturing outside again to put the animals to bed 💦☔️

The forecast for tomorrow is terrible so I am busy clearing the gutters in anticipation (much to the amusement of the jackdaws who happily fill them with roof moss) 💦☔️

Another very wet day. Only the pansies & violas seemed to enjoy it. While the rain hammered at the windows I spent a happy few minutes browsing bulbs in the Farmer Gracy sale. Needless to say a package of tempting varieties will be winging my way shortly! 🌱

The medlars are falling now & many are fully bletted (ripe). What shall I do with them? Jelly, mincemeat, liqueur? Decisions, decisions...

Very brief late evening sunshine, a rainbow, sheep & an emu. A very wet 24 hours in the Shire.💦🌈

As the sun breaks through after a very wet night I am busy planning to bring the last of the plants in before the cold weather arrives in a few days. A few roses are still blooming well & this is my favourite: the gorgeous, large fragrant Bourbon 'Mrs Paul' (George Paul, 1891) 🌹

Lovely large cherry leaves left on the grass to break down naturally, feed the soil & return nutrients to the trees. 🍂🌱

My latest second-hand book purchase. Seasonal soup recipes from a Benedictine Abbey set out by month. November includes Portuguese kale, Swiss chard & lentil, Zuppa alla Pavese (a bread soup), black bean soup & Monastic garlic soup. 😋🥣

As predicted it seems that the cats are fond of my recently acquired second-hand wool knee blanket. Tibs spent the night checking it out for warmth & comfort & he definately approves

A warm glow from a small table lamp moved to provide a extra light for plants in the window. It won't be long before we see ice on the inside of the glass. In readiness I have used some of the money earned from selling medlars & apples to buy some second hand wool blankets to wrap round my knees❄️

Surprise squash! I was clearing the winter squash bed to plant out my cold hardy vegetables (Collard greens, mustard, mibuna etc) & came across a lovely pumpkin lurking in the leaves. A bonus small Trombocino too to add to my roast veg tonight 😋

A lovely evening at @north_luffenham village #GuyFawkesNight celebration. A huge bonfire, sparklers, mulled wine & fireworks. Even the rain stayed away though it was very mild. Back now for baked potatoes & bangers & a rare treat - homemade Ellison's Orange toffee apples!
