technical feature parity/adoption is a total crapshoot, hardware prices are skyrocketing, the most popular pc configurations per the steam hardware survey are less performant on pretty much every metric than a base ps5

to give a particular example, dx12, a cornerstone technology of pc as a gaming platform, is still a complete mess with spotty at best developer support 10 years into its lifecycle (5 for dx12u) and it’s rotting from the inside with no viable alternatives

industry data on the platform from one of the biggest publishers is now demonstrably either misleading or outright incorrect, it’s becoming a technical minefield to develop for, and solutions/best practices are just not being implemented, broadly

well, yeah, everything they’re doing is primarily motivated by self-interest but it still benefits them to have a competing store on mobile when they’ve already vertically integrated a large part of the AAA development pipeline (artstation, unreal etc)

They seem a lot more interested in mobile overall (enough to get in protracted legal battles with platform holders) which also makes the PC store feel more like a source of wide-net leverage on that front rather than a self-actualized thing

Epic’s entire approach to the PC store for the past couple years really smells like they’ve given up and are just keeping it in a holding pattern as long as Fortnite can keep propping it up
It echoes a lot of other failed attempts (Origin etc) in their later years

The game was in part a spite project to prove shipping a commercially viable Godot title was possible at all because agdg posters kept doomsaying and fucking up the entire development scene for the engine

as someone who followed it closely the CruS dev was already an accomplished visual artist who only interacted with 4chan to troll nerds in the amateur gamedev threads because they wouldn’t stop derailing Godot development resources on every other website

it comes full circle on the themes Kojima has always been fixated on as a writer/director from a way more mature and thoughtful perspective, and in an industry currently bleeding legacy talent both from aging and capitalistic penny pinching, it’s a bright light to see at the end of the tunnel

So much of DS2 is Kojima and his team reckoning with the legacy of their games and putting a big cohesive bow on all of the ideas they’d been chewing on since the 90s, MGS1 and 5 in particular are big touchstones for it

It predates the Iliad by something like 1200 years and the earliest versions of the Hebrew bible we’re aware of by like 800-900, it’s such an interesting (albeit limited) window into what people were thinking about

The thing I like about Gilgamesh is that it’s such an early instance in the large scale mythopoetic body that it’s very unbothered with having the kind of granularity and continuity of later works like the Greek epics or the bible, it’s so alien to modern conventions of mythological literature

There was a time when we were leading the world in the advancement of computer graphics, the big picture of why we aren’t anymore is extremely frustrating

streaming also fucked over the cancon tv landscape irreparably but notably Harper also killed a bunch of other nascent industries that supported our media industry (like all the computer graphics studios in Ottawa and Vancouver)
