Through the Lens, Through the Madness – Entry #7

Coffin Mountain – “No Map, No Mercy” Coffin Mountain doesn’t sound like the kind of place you stumble into by accident. And yet… that’s exactly what we did. The map said Quartzville Road. The instincts said “Just a bit further.” The forest said nothing—just stood there watching like it knew something we didn’t. We were somewhere past the boundaries of good judgment, signal dead, roads turning to gravel and then to rumor.

Through the Lens, Through the Madness – Entry #6

Yaquina Head – “Birds, Fog, and the Ghost of the Sea” By Nerdy Viking Photography The ocean doesn’t care about you. Not in a poetic way—not in that “vast and beautiful indifference” kind of nonsense. I mean really doesn’t care. It would swallow you in an instant, spit your bones back onshore, and let the gulls pick through what’s left. And standing on the edge of Yaquina Head, lens in hand, I believed it.

Fungal Outlaws

There’s a moment on every hike where reality tilts, just a little, where the forest stops being a collection of trees and starts feeling like some ancient organism breathing around you. That’s what happened when we stumbled on these little fungal outlaws rising out of the moss. A…
Fungal Outlaws
There’s a moment on every hike where reality tilts, just a little, where the forest stops being a collection of trees and starts feeling like some ancient organism breathing around you. That’s what happened when we stumbled on these little fungal outlaws rising out of the moss. A tiny family of mushrooms, huddled together like they were conspiring against the rest of the woods.

Writing Prompt: Beach or Mountains
Beach or mountains? Which do you prefer? Why? Beach or Mountains? The Eternal Question With No Clean Answer Filed from Somewhere Between the Trees and Whatever Ghosts Follow Me There’s an old, warped question people like to toss around at parties or in those strange pockets of silence on a long drive: Beach or mountains? Like you’re supposed to pick one with the same certainty you pick a coffee order.

Devil’s Churn: A Lesson in Scale

There’s a moment, right before the ocean inhales, when the world holds its breath. Then it happens, the roar, the explosion of white fury, the Pacific trying to claw its way inland like it’s got unfinished business. That’s the Devil’s Churn for you, one of nature’s…
Devil’s Churn: A Lesson in Scale
There’s a moment, right before the ocean inhales, when the world holds its breath. Then it happens, the roar, the explosion of white fury, the Pacific trying to claw its way inland like it’s got unfinished business. That’s the Devil’s Churn for you, one of nature’s oldest tantrums, and somehow, still not done screaming. I snapped this shot while Robert stood there, a lone figure swallowed by the enormity of it all.

What Have You Been Working On?

What have you been working on? Christ, what haven’t I been working on? The camera’s been glued to my hand like a holy relic, and somewhere between the shutter clicks and the smell of damp Oregon earth, I decided to start writing it all down. The book, the madness,…
What Have You Been Working On?
What have you been working on? Christ, what haven’t I been working on? The camera’s been glued to my hand like a holy relic, and somewhere between the shutter clicks and the smell of damp Oregon earth, I decided to start writing it all down. The book, the madness, the miles, the ghosts that still hitchhike in my rearview mirror.

43 Years in the Wild

It took me a few days to say anything because, truth be told, I’ve been chewing on the ghosts. October’s always been my month , the sweet spot of madness and magic. My birthday. Halloween. The smell of cold air and dying leaves, like nature’s own whiskey-soaked confetti. But…

It took me a few days to say anything because, truth be told, I’ve been chewing on the ghosts. October’s always been my month , the sweet spot of madness and magic. My birthday. Halloween. The smell of cold air and dying leaves, like nature’s own whiskey-soaked confetti. But there’s a weight to it now. A silence that creeps in when the laughter fades.
