I discovered Katherine Arden through Small Spaces quartet, but made time for these and I’m so glad I did. I absolutely devoured the first and am waiting to be left alone long enough to get through the second 🥹

It’s hard to describe one piece of the novel that ties to my vision for Odd Jobs, but the ordinary locations and objects in the world that are made unsettling through subtle details is the approach I’m trying to emulate.

I wanted everything to be typical/familiar, but everything too still. There’ll be some people here eventually for dynamism, but I’m shooting to have it “look” lived in with cars out front, some lights on in the houses, but I intend to leave it looking borderline sterile overall.

I’m always so impressed with people learning this. I’ve been trying to work up the nerve to tackle it, but so far I’m white knuckling my crutch of camera-facing billboards a la Doom (1993).
I stg it’s a stylistic choice 🙃
