Afterwards, a bunch of us undergrads mobbed him near the exit, and he was gracious and kind. I don't remember what he said, but just how much he was exactly what I expected and hoped he would be: tall, handsome, erudite, witty, humane. RIP to a giant.

I heard him speak in January 1987. During the Q and A, somebody engaged him in a lengthy, inscrutable colloquy on Czech politics. It went on for a while. Somebody else shot up a hand and yelled, "So, was it fun to work with Terry Gilliam?" Place roared in relieved laughter. Yes, he said, it was.
