My inbox zero lasted for exactly 10 minutes today - and I’ve got proof!

Not to bad for the last day before the summer break and good reason to ignore any incoming messages for a while. #outofoffice

On my way to #ADDA5 starting later today in Tilburg.
Our panel on style in and of AI-generated images, organised by @nataliialaba.com, @tjthomson.bsky.social and me starts right after the keynote. Exciting!

My own talk will be about --sref style codes on Midjourney.

Nataliia Laba @nataliialaba.com on text-to-image generators, the resulting artefacts and our interpretation.

Her food for thought:
Can human qualities really be translated to AI?
We should continue addressing how people's experiences shape their expectations towards AI.

Ana Guerberof and Sheila Castilho on text-to-text generative AI, creativity and evaluation.

They ask:
How to quantify (human and AI) creativity ?
Are models actually being creative or simply mirroring natural language learning processes?

Lambert Schomaker introducing the lighting talks with THE AI expert on multimodality @rug.nl, head of the HAICu project.

His main message:
"Language only works through shared multimodal experience."

Busy week:
Today, Menghan Deng and I presented our setup for a special issue contribution on food packaging.

We are currently working on a multimodal corpus and critical discourse analysis of packages for breast milk substitutes in China and NL.

In Dresden today for the #LinguisTikTok conference organized by @fussballinguist.bsky.social and @coldamber.bsky.social.

Happy to take part and say something about the multimodal complexity of TikTok as a platform and the videos evolving. Might say something about multimodal film/AV analysis.

Sorry, no. My break will be a break.

This is so wrong. No one should make such suggestions.
Please decide yourself what (not) to do during the break.

We had a motivating meeting today with people doing #multimodality in/around Groningen and it was nice to catch up with everyone.

We also brainstormed about current needs & challenges of the field. Good to see enthusiasm for data analysis, but also outreach and social impact!

The same is true for many GenAI visuals & videos. They lack a discourse semantic level, i.e. dynamic, relational mechanisms for the construction of logical structures. Especially AI videos do not feature cohesive representations of social actors or settings, they often only use parallelisms.
