The Yellow-thighed brushfinch (Atapetes tibialis) painting.

This one went through a lot of iterations to get to this state. I wanted to illustrate their tendency to small family groups.

A Common tody Flycatcher (Todirostrum cinereum) building it’s hanging nest in Costa Rica. At the 18 second mark it winds a spider thread around the branch, interesting!

The only photo I have of the Tody Motmot, not great but…

For some reason it’s the only species that comes when I bird call with my own voice, I’m really crappy at it with every other species.
Costa Rican birders are scary good at accurate bird calls and song.

Here’s the Silvery-throated Jay painting.
They are usually found in small family groups and I’ve only ever seen them high in the forest canopy.

I had a lot of fun painting this Sulphur-rumped Tanager.
These guys can be found on the Caribbean slopes of both Costa Rica and Panama.

One of our local Scarlet-rumpled Tanagers,
These guys make me happy despite how common they are, social, bossy and with striking colours to boot, what’s not to like?

The Stripe-breasted Wren painting.
Most Wren species love hiding out in dense understory tangle.

As an artist it’s a lot of fun to try to clearly illustrate these guys while remaining true to where and how they’re usually seen when encountered in the wild.

A painting of a Yellow-winged Vireo.
These paintings always start as a blank page and are never based on any single photo.
Correct species markings come from both written sources and multiple curated images in order to render a depiction of the species as a whole.

The White necked Jacobin painting.
These guys with their bright white markings and tail are easy to spot against the dark and leafy forest background.
In our neck of the woods we can sometimes see them foraging alongside the river.

The Acorn Woodpecker painting, a common find at higher elevations from Washington through Mexico and Central America to Colombia.
I always stop to watch their antics and their call has a hilarious quality that makes me smile whenever I hear it.
