Now, I might be fuzzy on details since it was... what, at least 4 or 5 years ago? But yeah, the team got so much backlash over their decisions with Jade, Gamz, hell MOST of the characters that apparently they weren't going to update until the project was finished in it's entirety.

naming her Yiffany Longstockings, Yiffy for short. No one even knew she existed until she was kidnapped and her existence was announced to ALL at the start of the next round of the game, then becoming one of the 4 human players for the next gen. I watched that shitstorm on the birb in HORROR.

Well, first the team declared the fanon joke of Jade being doggy-equipped due to Bec was transphobic, but it was GOOD rep that she tries to force her way into Dave/Karkat's relationship, has Rose cheat on Kanaya, 2 month pregnancy, then taking the baby to an island like she grew up on, and then

Yeah, that ending was pretty damn trash. Gamz was done so damn dirty, then the sequel just... disgusting what happened with him. Then the Jade controversy that, from what I remember, was the biggest reason the whole thing went dark in the first place. I thought it died years ago.

And then there's the nonsense that is the officially recognized fan-made sequel that turned so many people away by going by fanon instead of canon and assassinating SO many characters. There's a reason that project went dark years ago.
