Leave the leaves (except on walking paths). Saves you time and saves the ecosystem - butterflies, moths, fireflies, beetles, native bees, and creatures further up the food chain. Good for the soil, too.

To sing it as some kind of hymn or eulogy just feels off and I've never understood it - except maybe that it's a secular song that sounds like a hymnal, so it can be used in non-religious contexts to signal grief or just portentousness.
