The device needs to have the hardware to process a video input signal. On computers a capture card is how you generally do that.
The only way you'd get a software-only solution is if Nintendo supported AirPlay or something.

You could use the Mac as a display if you have a capture card. Finding one that works on Mac and is quick enough to play games on is the tricky bit.

My first flash drive was 256MB. It still works and has a handy lock switch on the side which I kinda wish flash drives would still do today. Can't remember how much it was though.
