This maxim has always haunted me, and feels very hurtful to people who experienced emotional neglect or abuse in childhood. Thank you for touching on it. It gets thrown around with very little thought but if you actually think about it it’s kind of breathtaking in its cruelty.

And these tests are not mailed “to the government.” Caution about medical information is understandable but this is a leap forward for the U.S. to be on par with many many other places around the world that already offer this as an effective screening tool.

Well, they’d be in logistical trouble pretty quickly because HPV is so incredibly common.

If you test positive for HPV then you go to the doctor for further follow up. This is a screening test. It’s much like screening for colon cancer is changing with the advent of cologuard. This HPV test is already in use in Canada and other places in the world.

Self-sampling HPV tests are in tested and in use elsewhere in the world. They all work the same way. The FDA approved this test but they didn’t “make” it.

HPV infection is very common and usually goes way with an immune response. Advanced cervical cancer would affect fertility but that takes years to develop. If anyone made a “registry” of HPV infection, like 80%+ of anyone who ever had sex would be on it, and it would change constantly.

Consider asking a doctor or health clinic if you can do a self-sampling HPV test for cervical cancer screening. It works just like a swab for a COVID test (just a different part of the body). You are in control and you can do it privately.
