actually the entire upper hudson line north of croton harmon ( so non electrified) has 6 car length platforms with 7 car trains 🤷‍♂️. the first car is able to squeeze in their rear door to the platform @alonlevy.bsky.social @2avesag.as

platforms were rebuilt to be high level sometime in the late 20th century but only six car lengths long
November 17, 2025 at 3:21 AM
it’s probably more convenient this way as most riders are near the south end of the train ( people coming in from grand central enter from the south side of the train) but want to exit to the north ( town center). so longer would be a longer walk. doubt this is deliberate

platform built a long time ago ( probably before state takeover of service) is 6 cars long. metro north runs 7 car trains even off peak, i’m told it’s a lot of work to remove a car

on a metronorth train and my door didn’t open, everyone went to another door asked why it didn’t open and conductor made a face and then saw why

i feel like i’ve seen that in the us too

over other countries? this is very Canadian ( Canada is more extreme in some ways)

the police officers that arrested him are state police. he can exercise control over the police
November 16, 2025 at 1:55 AM
why are the state police even there? can he fire him? seems like political malpractice
November 16, 2025 at 1:51 AM
i asked a conductor why the doors hadn’t open yet and he responded because he hasn’t pressed the button yet with the tone of i had asked the dumber most annoying question ever

“penn station doesn’t announce their tracks until 10 minutes prior to departure” is not a valid criticism. a train station with long gaps between train arrivals / departures is not well used. off peak though probably could do a bit better than 10 minutes

not idea what’s physically possible but widening the Hilton passageway with good signage, adding more open space in general on the lower level and extending the central corridor to njtransit / amtrak tracks would help a lot. worst current issues are with njtransit

*no idea

as the crowds get in the way of others. the plus side of penn is there’s multiple entrances to the platforms ( 4 for lirr, 3 for njtransit ) and fairly fast to get down if you know the layout and transfer between trains

my unpopular opinion is Penn Ststion is ugly but almost functional. main issues are (1) poor signage between RR agencies ( though the exit concourse entrance at least says all tracks) (2) passageways too narrow

the kings cross comparison is silly because it’s a terminal station but St. Pancreas has the same issues to thru running Thameslink ( and Eurostar but that has security / border control issues)

the LIRR to Amtrak connection is really fast ( way better than say, Kings Cross in London because that’s a terminal and each service is separated) although confusing. it’s not worth reducing amtrak frequency north of penn. maybe just the amtraks that terminate at nyc could go to jamaica?

LGA-Billy Bishop coming soon hopefully. LGA is a lot bigger than Billy Bishop
November 15, 2025 at 2:21 PM
well for short haul flights there aren’t many flights out of JFK. I fly regularly out to Toronto and it’s mostly LGA, some EWR flights but it’s too far from me. NYC gets a ton of international visitors and most of those fly into JFK ( about half of JFK).

you’re calling toronto scenic?
