Philippe brewed a special and most excellent beer for the conference poster session!

New report available from our Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey at Somerleyton Hall in June 2025:

The data suggests the presence of heated flower beds, known as "hot beds", extending immediately beyond the main glass houses.

The survey revealed the location of a Roman town house with an intact floor layer, an insula wall lined with a series of 1m square plinths, and a possible small shrine or cistern.

Touch and go for a while but, thankfully, the patient made a full recovery...
Inside view of a disassembled Sessionette 75 guitar amplifier that required some minor surgery to recover from a temporarily lost voice. Good view of the Celestion speaker and spring reverb housed in the metal box to left of the photograph. Basingstoke may not be the centre of the musical universe, but gave us Session amplifiers and Tanita Tikaram...

Animation of the Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) I made from the data I collected at St Osyth's Priory, St Osyth, Essex. This form of presentation helps to visualise a complex 3D data set and allows the variation of significant anomalies to be seen with depth.

Tidying up and found a stash of ancient (in so many ways...) hysteresis loops. Back in the day when Tesla were just a how-big-is-your-field thing... more details in the alt-text...
A plot of a magnetic hysteresis loop measured between plus and minus 1 Tesla on a vibrating sample magnetometer. The response of the sample shown in red "remembers" its previous exposure to a strong magnetic field and presents a hysteresis loop characteristic of a single magnetic domain particles. Further laboratory measurements of the same sample suggested this came from bio magnetite deposited by bacteria at the bottom of ditch during the Iron age / Romano-British transition in South East England.

Lovely walk in the south downs this afternoon. Good to feel the first signs of spring ushered in celebration of Candlemas.
