Most political engaged people I know have huge love for people of good will who "get it" despite their hostile neighbors, be they in Birmingham or Temecula.

Also, the entire country is held hostage by Dixie's peculiar culture. Systemic and individual racism pervades the entire land, but it hasn't captured the political machinery to the same extent. I think regional resentment is borne more of frustration than condescension.

Great write up. A couple random thoughts- this discussion is necessary for any postive change, and requires honesty about racism, religion and region. Not only all of those third rails, the last thing folks from the South want to hear this discussion initiated by an outsider.
