Another happy morning in the High Traffic Neighbourhood outside the New Sydney Place LTN
March 4, 2025 at 8:29 AM

United Sydney Road Unliveable Neighbourhoods Group was formed in 2024 to oppose the B&NES implementation of the Sydney Road LTN ETRO. The group is led by residents from Bathwick and Bathampton and represents the views of many in these areas.

The council leadership is in a hole and it is time to stop digging.”

We call on the members of the committee to follow their consciences rather than party lines. If their conscience isn’t sufficient, perhaps they should take note of the question put to Ms Hobhouse by a resident “Is your botched implementation of LNs becoming an electoral millstone?”
March 4, 2025 at 7:44 AM
McCabe goes on to say: “Following the call-in of this starkly unreasonable decision, we look forward to the Scrutiny Committee on the 13th of March taking the right path and rejecting the decision by Cllr Ellliott and withdrawing the ETRO.

It was abundantly clear that Wera was left out in the cold by the council leadership to try to defend the indefensible.”
March 4, 2025 at 7:44 AM
Once again, it is a shame that, as has been the case throughout implementation of this LN and others, councillors have failed to engage with concerned residents…only our MP had the guts to turn up.
March 4, 2025 at 7:44 AM
Neil McCabe, spokesperson for UNSUNG commented: “We thank Ms Hobhouse for giving us, and our resident community, her time on Friday night. Hopefully, she now realises just how flawed and potentially dangerous this LN is, and the failure of council leadership to admit their mistakes.

• Regular chaos at the bottom of North Road as traffic to King Edward's School backs up due to 800 more cars a day passing through.
• Children feeling too frightened to cycle on surrounding roads.
March 4, 2025 at 7:44 AM
Residents also shared their personal concerns of:
• Personal security at night on a now-deserted Sydney Road
• Disruption to care staff travel forcing an elderly relative to move into a care home rather than receive in-home care.
March 4, 2025 at 7:44 AM
@bathnes.bsky.social deliberately breaching guidance on community consultation with councillors not being impartial, failing to engage with concerned residents, and failing to respect the rejection of the LN;
March 4, 2025 at 7:44 AM
• Opposition from First Bus who stated “Any LTN’s push traffic out onto main roads and increase traffic, thus delaying bus services and making the car the most attractive option. The recent Sydney Place LTN has pushed a lot of traffic out onto the bottom of Bathwick Hill, delaying Service U1 & U2.”
March 4, 2025 at 7:44 AM
• Strong opposition from Bathwick St Mary School who stated their strong belief “that the Sydney Road closure is negatively impacting children being able to safely walk to their local school. The headteacher believes it is imperative to reopen Sydney Road to keep children safe.”
March 4, 2025 at 7:44 AM
• as few as 33 households benefiting from the LN, at the expense of 490 households on roads taking displaced traffic seeing up to 50% increases in volumes;
March 4, 2025 at 7:44 AM
Ms Hobhouse heard that the decision to make the LN permanent had been made despite:
• 76% of residents opposing the LN;
• traffic being displaced onto less safe roads;
March 4, 2025 at 7:44 AM
The meeting was held against the backdrop of the decision by @bathnes.bsky.social to make the LN permanent being called in for review by 12 opposition councillors. B&NES Cabinet members Kevin Guy, Sarah Warren, Manda Rigby and Joel Hirst were invited to attend, yet all but Ms Hobhouse declined.

Bath, UK, 3 March 2025 – UNited Sydney Unliveable Neighbourhoods Group (UNSUNG), the resident-led action group, organised a meeting to hear from over a hundred and fifty residents concerned at the impact of displaced traffic from the Sydney Road Liveable Neighbourhood (LN) on surrounding streets.
